THE WOMEN'S RIGHTS PRIZE

The Women's Rights Prize is presented to an individual or group that has made significant contributions, often at great risk, to furthering the rights of women and girls in any area and to advancing public awareness of the need for gender equality to achieve a just world.

To stifle any one segment of a population is to shortchange the whole of humanity; to release that segment is to free it to contribute to universal human progress.

The Women's Rights Prize, established in 2003 and awarded annually, is a gold medal and an unrestricted cash award of $500,000. It may honor achievement in any area, including but not limited to, human rights, social welfare, education and the arts.

The award is presented without respect to gender, nationality, race, ethnicity or religious creed.

"Our hope is to redress restrictive laws and customs that deprive women not only of their human rights, but also of their ability to enrich the human condition."

Peter Gruber, Chairman
The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation
