2006 JUSTICE PRIZE RECIPIENT Aharon Barak, Retired President of the Supreme Court of Israel President Aharon Barak is renowned for championing an activist judiciary and the rule of law and democracy. Under his term, the Supreme Court has issued rulings that have protected democracy both from terrorism and from the means the state wants to use to fight terrorism. 2005

In his native Malaysia and in various of the world’s hot spots, attorney Param Cumaraswamy, at considerable risk to himself, has stood up for human dignity and the independence of the judiciary.

With a life long commitment to human rights, Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to be the first President of South Africa's Constitutional Court, the country's highest court in constitutional matters. As an advocate and as a judge, Deputy Chief Justice Pius Langa has helped to establish his country’s Constitution as a model for modern democratic societies. He shares his expertise and experience in a number countries struggling with regime change and new democracies, including Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, the Fiji Islands and Tanzania.
